DON’T BE FOOLED***********3-10-2012 PHONE ESTIMATE VS. SITE VISIT TO GIVE QUOTE************************ by Carpet Repair Baltimore | Mar 11, 2012 As you’re looking around the web for a company to repair your carpet you will notice not many at all, in fact, there are about 3 of us that do it full time. My competition wants you to believe that every situation is different, and that they have to see it before they can give a estimate. They also want you to believe that companies like mine that give a free phone estimate will jack up the price after we get to your home. In fact, this is exactly what they told my wife when I had her call…”there are people in your area that will quote you $90 and when they show up try to charge you $400″. They are bold face liars! I’m sorry if I sound harsh but when someone attacks my integrity and my livelihood I fight back! HERE’S THE TRUTH THEY DONT WANT YOU TO KNOW. THEY WANT TO COME TO YOUR HOME AND HARD SELL YOU WHILE LYING ABOUT THEIR COMPETITION! Anyone who is any good at carpet repair doesn’t need to see it before giving a price and I CAN PROVE IT! First lets breakdown the different types of repair: REAL QUICK… IF ANYONE READING THIS WANT TO SPEAK TO ONE OF MY PAST CLIENTS AS A REFERENCE EMAIL ME AND I WILL PUT YOU IN CONTACT WITH THEM. STRETCHING THE RIPPLES OUT OF CARPET – This is about as basic as you can get. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying it’s easy, but the process is the same whether it’s a 10′ x 10′ bedroom, or basement we did a week back that was 20′ x 43′. Again, anyone with any experience knows the basic principles like stretching away from doorways, and begin in the middle and work to the corners. Below are copies straight out of the Crain Instruction manual for the power stretcher we and many other use. This is the main tool used when properly stretching carpet. You’ll notice the process is virtually identical! Really the only thing that would cause any issues is if the tack strips were bad and needed to be replaced, and that is simple to do. We get a new tack strip out of our truck and nail it, or Pam gun it in either way it takes 5-10 extra min. and our cost of materials is about 40 cents. Do you think that constitutes charging you extra? So anyone that can’t give you a solid price is either inexperienced or using hard sell tactics to get your business. CARPET PATCHING – This would include pet damage, burns, tears, Berber pulls, and bleach stains really anything that requires you to cut out a section of carpet, and replace it with a better looking piece. The patch could be on the edge of the carpet meaning where the carpet meets a wall, or when the carpet meets another room of flooring. The only other place is somewhere away from a wall, or transition to another room of flooring. Ok, if it’s against a wall, or another room of flooring the only things you have to deal with is the carpet, pad, and tack strip. If the repair is away from a wall, or transition then all you have to worry about is the carpet and pad THATS IT! This isn’t rocket science. Since we already know we’re going to have to replace the carpet, and maybe the pad the only other variable is the tack strip (and that’s if you against a wall or transitioning into another room….if your away from a wall or transition then you don’t have anything to worry about) and you now know how easy that process is. So why would a true professional need to see the damage before giving you a quote? Because they know once they are in your home they GOT YOU! Carpet patches are used from extra carpet the consumer may have, or from the back of a closet. One of my competitors suggest to leave the hole in your closet because “you’ll eventually replace all of your carpet” Um ok that might be true, but who wants a ugly hole where you can see the carpet pad anywhere in your home. To me that is a job half done. A true professional doesn’t leave their client like that. Baltimore Carpet Repair & Cleaning uses remnants from our truck to patch the closet. Sure it won’t be a perfect match but MUCH better than a hole to the padding. HONEST AND EXPERIENCED CARPET REPAIR PROFESSIONALS CAN GIVE A ACCURATE ESTIMATE OVER THE PHONE BY ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS. BEWARE IF THEY SAY “WE’LL COME OUT AND GIVE YOU A PRICE AND DO THE WORK RIGHT THEN AND THERE” WHY? BECASUE THEY ARE EXPECTING TO SELL YOU ON THE SPOT WITH OUT GIVING TIME TO THINK ABOUT IT! This is why professional companies like mine give phone estimates. First, it saves me and the consumer time. Secondly, most consumers have lived with their carpet issue for a bit already and need time to decide if they want to live with the carpet like they have, or invest the $$ to repair it.
